How to Beat Brain Rot and Get Back into Reading

We’ve been hearing a lot this year about declining reading rates – from news headlines, social media, and our friends and family. For a lot of people, it just feels harder to read and enjoy books like they used to.
If you’re in a reading slump and you’d like to get back into the swing of things, don’t despair! You’re definitely not alone, and we’ve got tips and tricks you can try to kickstart your reading engine. Lots of these suggestions came from our Bluebird & Co. community!
1. Audiobooks totally count
Turn on an audiobook while you’re driving, doing chores or snuggling a baby – you’ll be surprised how progress you make, and the time will fly! You could even try switching back and forth between audio and paper copies to help power through when you stall out on a chapter.
Protip: You can support indie bookstores by listening to audiobooks through Libro.fm, or you can check them out for free from your library with Libby!
2. Leave your phone in another roomÂ
We all know how distracting our phones can be. Putting a little physical space between you and your devices can help with concentration.
3. Always carry a book with you

Give yourself the option to get a few minutes of reading in at the doctor’s office or in line at the grocery store. Spare moments can really add up!
4. Start your day with a book
Reading first thing in the morning can kickstart your interest in the story and motivate you to keep going throughout the day.
Protip: Get up early for a quiet environment in your house and fewer notifications demanding your attention.
5. Try graphic novels or short stories
Victories build motivation – try some faster reads to notch some quick wins!
Protip: Flannery recommends Good Talk by Mira Jacob as a place to start with graphic novels!
6. Start small
Don’t overwhelm yourself with huge reading goals at first. Only read one paragraph today? One sentence? Congratulations – you read today and it totally counts!!!
7. Choose books you’re excited about
Don’t go for books you think you should read, until maybe your reading habit is super solid. Enjoyment is key to staying consistent. So have fun with it, and don’t be afraid to stop reading a book you’re not enjoying.
Happy reading, and let us know your tips and tricks in the comments below!
