Bluebird Mobile Bookshop Series Pt. 1

I get asked questions ALL OF THE TIME about the trailer and running a mobile bookstore. Everything from where do you get your books to how do you find places to park. So I thought, why not share with you all some of the answers to your favorite questions in a series of weekly posts!
Now, A VERY BRIEF history if you haven’t been here for too long…..
Initially stalled by COVID, I had the trailer up and running in 2021. I took her to various spots in our area like breweries, vineyards, festivals and she was a huge hit. Along the way, I met my friend Chelsea, owner of Fancy & Nell, and we began organizing makers markets together. And in 2022, we combined our businesses and opened Bluebird & CO., our brick and mortar.
✨✨Since opening, the question I get asked the most is: Do you still take the trailer out?✨✨
The answer is yes and no.
I used to take the trailer out weekends and I was mostly home during the week. Now, its impossible to work all week at the shop and see the shop grow while working weekends. I’d never sleep, eat, read or see my family. AND I’m the only one that can (and will) hitch it up, drive it, load it and do all of the labor intensive work it entails. So we are definitely not out and about like I used to be!
We try to always take it to Crozet Arts & Crafts in May and October but in recent years, staffing that has been tough.
BUT ITS CONTENT GOLD AND PEOPLE LOVE IT. So what now?
The answer is we don’t know! With the original business of JUST books shifting to books & clothes and all the things, we’re talking about redoing the inside to make it more flexible to all the products we carry. For example, could we take it out for a Clothing Pop Up? Charm Bar pop? Patch Bar pop up?
So that is my stock answer. Tell us in the comments, what would you like to see us do with the trailer?Â

I live in Richmond, VA and have a background in book selling. I’d love to be considered if you are ever interested in getting the trailer out and about more often in terms of needing staff. I’m underwhelmed by the adult indie shop choices in RVA for adults (bbgb forever) and Cville, so Bluebird has become my local-ish indie of choice.
